What is Eczema?
Eczema is a skin condition characterized by dry, red, itchy patches of skin. Eczema is caused by skin barrier dysfunction, which results in trans-epidermal water loss. Essentially, this means that the protective barrier on the top layer of the skin is not strong enough, allowing irritants and bacteria to enter and moisture to escape. This leads to dry, infection-prone skin.
How is Eczema Treated?
Eczema treatments are aimed at repairing the skin to reinforce this barrier. A proactive approach, involving trigger avoidance and consistent moisturizing with emollients (softening creams), is recommended, and while topical anti-inflammatories called corticosteroids have long been used as a treatment, newer therapeutic options have also been proven safe and effective.

What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a common, chronic inflammatory condition that can affect the skin, nails, and joints, and is caused by the body’s immune system mistakenly attacking healthy skin cells. It typically presents as red plaques covered in silverly scale on the elbows and knees, but psoriasis can appear in many different ways, which is why a diagnosis is essential for finding the right treatment.
How is Psoriasis Treated?
While there is no cure for psoriasis, many patients have responded well to therapeutic options as well as topical regimens, especially patients with limited areas of psoriasis. However, if psoriasis is extensive or aggressive, it may require advanced biologic therapy.
