How a Hybrid Filler Works

A hybrid filler is an injectable that brings together two well-established ingredients in one syringe: hyaluronic acid (HA), a hydrating molecule that draws water into the skin, and calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), a mineral-based microsphere that stimulates your body's own collagen production. The leading ready-to-use hybrid filler approved by Health Canada is HArmonyCa™ from Allergan Aesthetics, formulated with 20 mg/mL crosslinked hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres measuring 25 to 45 microns, and a small amount of lidocaine for comfort during injection.

Once placed into the deeper layers of the skin, the HA component restores volume and softly lifts the treated area right away. The CaHA microspheres then act as a supportive scaffold, signalling fibroblasts (the cells responsible for producing collagen) to generate new Type I collagen over the following weeks and months. Most patients see continued improvements in skin firmness and quality around three months after treatment, with overall results lasting up to two years, depending on individual response.

What Areas Can Be Treated with Hybrid Fillers?

Hybrid fillers are designed for the structural areas of the mid- and lower face. During your consultation, we will recommend treatment zones based on your facial anatomy and goals.

Cheeks and cheekbones: to restore mid-face volume and create a soft lateral lift
Jawline: to refine the definition and improve laxity along the lower face
Lower cheeks: to soften accordion lines that appear when smiling
Pre-jowl area: to support contour and reduce the look of early jowling
Chin: to improve projection and balance the lower face

Hybrid fillers are not used in the lips, under-eye area, or forehead. For those concerns, we will recommend an HA filler or another treatment better suited to those zones.

What to Expect From Your Hybrid Filler Treatment

We start by cleansing the treated areas. Because hybrid fillers like HArmonyCa™ are formulated with lidocaine, a local anesthetic mixed directly into the product, most find the injections very tolerable. The product is placed into the planned treatment zones using careful, considered technique. Plan on being in the chair for roughly 30 to 45 minutes.

Once treatment is complete, you'll notice a softer lift and smoother contour right away. Some mild redness, tenderness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites is common and typically settles within a few days.

In the weeks that follow, the calcium hydroxylapatite component begins prompting your skin to produce new collagen, which gradually adds to the firmness, density, and elasticity you see in the mirror.
