Rejuvenate & Enhance

Eyes are the windows of the soul and can say so much without speaking a word — so it is understandable that many seek to improve this area. Common concerns include genetic dark circles, a sunken or sullen look, crepey skin and fine lines, crow’s feet, or hooded eyes.

What Causes dark circles under the eyes?

Dark circles under eyes can be attributed to several factors. Very common regardless of skin type and ethnicity, they may be caused by shadowing into a deep trough, increased melanin pigment in the skin, or close proximity to deeper structures such as blue blood vessels, and muscle.

It’s important to note that skin under the eyes is 8 times thinner than anywhere on the body. Only .5 mm thick, it still has three primary layers: epidermisdermis and subcutaneous fat. Packed into these thin layers are pigment producing melanocytes, blood vessels, nerves, fat, connective tissue, collagen, elastin, follicles and glands. The normal aging process can be visually amplified in the under eye area. Collagen and elastin degradation result in crepey, drooping, hollow extra thin skin. Chronic UV exposure amplifies this change.

Genetic pigment production and storage remains a mystery for early onset dark circles. Metabolic effects of lack of sleep and smoking can cause chronic irritation and darkening. Allergies, inflammation, and chronic rubbing may also contribute. Bone density loss and deep facial fat loss can change the ocular structure giving pronounced eye troughs and deep hollowing casting a shadow effect.

How to Get Rid of Dark Circles Under Eyes?

Getting rid of dark circles under eyes can be tricky with so many contributing factors. It would be best to come in and have an assessment with our cosmetic patient consultant and determine if it is really pigmentation or lifestyle/genetic factors. Although it is unlikely that a darker appearance under the eyes can be eliminated completely, it’s best to assess the eyes and face globally and determine where enhancements can be made. This will result in a more refreshed, well rested appearance.

  • If the tear trough area has a hollowed appearance then it may be best to fill this area with hyaluronic acid filler. The tear trough hollows are between the low eyelid and the upper cheek beside the nose. The angle of the trough may be too “sharp” casting shadows. Filler can soften this angle giving a rested look. The deeper middle cheek connected below contains ligaments that can create a depression when there is volume loss. Expertly placed filler can instantly lift this area, filling the hollow and minimizing dark circles.
  • Lighter toned skin can have darkness that has a purple or blue tinge. This happens because the very thin skin shows through the veins and vascularity. Increasing collagen density and strength can be achieved with platelet rich plasma (PRP). PRP boosts collagen and can thicken the skin, making it less translucent. It won’t resolve this completely but it certainly can help. We recommend daily eye serums containing antioxidants, and collagen boosting peptides to maintain epidermal quality.
  • Advanced lightening ingredients can be custom blended for this delicate skin area.
  • Laser resurfacing is an aggressive step to carefully tighten and renew eye lid skin. It is only performed by a doctor with the use of an ocular eye shield. There is multi week downtime and colour normalization requiring time and patience, but the improvement in the quality of skin is remarkable.
