Laser Skin Resurfacing in Toronto
The experienced dermatologists and dedicated staff at Kingsway Dermatology & Cosmetic Centre are proud to provide Toronto and surrounding areas with cutting-edge medical and cosmetic dermatology services.
Laser skin resurfacing is an effective way to reduce signs of aging and to give your face an overall refreshed, more youthful look, and many patients find the treatment boosts their confidence and helps them to feel better about themselves with a smoother complexion.
What is Laser Resurfacing?
Over time, vital components of healthy skin will naturally diminish, and this damage is hastened by ultraviolet radiation and environmental pollutants. As a result, fine lines form, skin thins and loosens, brown spots appear, a rough texture can develop, and pores can appear larger. A laser treatment is ideal for addressing these issues with skin texture, pigmentation, and appearance.
Laser skin resurfacing works by passing high-intensity light deep beneath the surface of the skin in tiny columns, resulting in controlled thermal “wounding” that triggers the formation of new collagen.
At Kingsway, we use several advanced lasers to perform skin resurfacing treatments. We also have several other options for skin resurfacing, including the Nano/Micro Laser Peel for superficial lines and scars and the Full Field Laser Resurfacing treatment, for deeper skin care concerns, although this treatment requires more downtime.
Our Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatments
The types of lasers utilized for skin resurfacing include:
- – An ablative laser, which superheats water molecules in the skin tissue and causes the thin outer layer of skin to peel away, revealing new skin beneath and stimulating collagen growth. Recovery time for this laser treatment tends to be a bit longer, although the results are dramatic.
- – A non-ablative laser, which is a gentler treatment that also stimulates collagen production to improve tone and texture. It may require more sessions for your desired outcome, but the laser resurfacing is less invasive and requires less recovery time.
Both ablative and non-ablative laser treatments can be delivered with the use of fractional or non-fractional lasers. Fractional lasers deliver energy in columns, leaving skin intact in between and allowing us to safely treat deeper skin concerns without damaging the surrounding tissue.
Our Kingsway skin care experts use the Sciton® Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser, a unique device that has both ablative and non-ablative lasers built into the same unit, which allows us to fully customize our laser treatments. The ablative laser is extremely efficient and allows for shorter recovery times, while the non-ablative laser can be safely used on deep skin concerns and darker skin tones.
We also utilize the Palomar Icon 2940 Fractional Ablative Laser, which is used for deep acne scarring and wrinkles. Since this laser delivers energy in a fractionated pattern, it allows for deeper penetration into the skin while maintaining safety.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Can a Laser Treat?
Laser skin resurfacing treats formation of wrinkles, skin laxity, texture, and sun and age spots, as increased collagen production will restore a healthy thickness to the skin, refresh dull patches, and even out irregular tones. This treatment can be used on the entire face as well as the neck and décolletage area.
Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Hurt?
There is minimal discomfort during fractional laser resurfacing, and most patients compare it to a light rubber band snap against the skin. However, we use several different lasers for our variety of laser skin resurfacing treatments; some lasers provide deeper treatments than others and have the potential to increase discomfort, but this sensation is temporary.
Is There Downtime Associated with Laser Resurfacing?
After treatment, patients can expect mild swelling for one to three days, and redness from three to five days. This can be easily treated with ice compresses and calming moisturizing lotions. Many of our patients find that they can go out the next day with light makeup, and you should be sure to wear high-quality sunscreen in the days and weeks after, as your skin will be particularly sensitive.
When Will I See Results?
The process of collagen formation continues over the next several months, softening and plumping skin and gradually reducing the appearance of facial lines, pigmentation, and scarring. Ideal results will be apparent over a six to eight-month period.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
A fractional laser treatment consists of a series of four to six sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart. When you come to Kingsway for your consultation, we’ll craft a personalized treatment plan to meet your individual skin care needs, including how many sessions you will need as well as how often they should occur.
