Treatments for Uneven Skin Tone

When you come to Kingsway Dermatology for an examination, our expert dermatologists will assess your skin tone concerns. We’ll take into account your skin type, ancestry, and lifestyle, as well as other external factors, such as a move from one climate to another, or prolonged sun exposure without sunscreen, which can negatively impact your skin tone.

Once we’ have completed an examination and understand your skin, your goals, and your lifestyle, our dermatologists will formulate a customized plan that combines various treatment modalities to help you achieve the results you desire.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove the top layers of skin using an acid solution, revealing new skin underneath and triggering the body’s healing response. This treatment can be customized to different depths depending on whether a gentle versus aggressive treatment is necessary.

Similar to a chemical peel, microdermabrasion is an exfoliating treatment that uses a specialty tool to gently sand away the topmost layers of skin. By exposing the new skin underneath and removing the dull outer layer, it contributes to a rejuvenated complexion.

Dermal Infusion

Dermal infusion combines non-invasive wet exfoliation with deep delivery of customized solutions to the skin, as we have several different facial serums available. It is gentler on the skin than microdermabrasion and chemical peels, but the results are similar.

Nano/Microlaser Peels

Nano and Microlaser peels use light energy to remove the outermost layers of skin instantly. This laser treatment goes deeper than microdermabrasion and chemical peels to stimulate collagen production without leaving heat damage. The result is smooth, even skin.

Microneedling is a treatment in which very small needles are used to prick the skin, creating tiny wounds. This stimulates the body’s natural healing response, which generates new collagen and skin tissue and evens out skin tone.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP treatment involves removing a small amount of blood from your body, extracting the platelets for their growth factors, and putting them back into the skin via a PRP delivery system to naturally promote cellular regeneration in the treatment area.

IPL (intense pulsed light) and BBL (broad band light)

IPL and BBL are both light-based energies used for treating brown spots and red vessels caused by sun damage from unprotected sun exposure. IPL uses a flash lamp system which has a specific wavelength to target anything red, being blood vessels, spider veins, capillaries or anything brown, such as sunspots, age spots or pigmented lesions.

The light penetrates down to the second layer of the skin called the dermis, while not affecting the top layer (the epidermis). When targeting brown spots, the light will cause those spots to absorb the energy and initially get darker.

Generally, between 7-10 days those dark spots will sluff off revealing a more even tone to your skin. Depending on the amount of sun damage, 3-5 treatments may be needed to successfully treat the vessels and pigmentation. They are generally done 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results. IPL/BBL can be used on all parts of the body having brown sunspots and red vessels.

Excel® V

Excel® V is a vascular laser considered to be the new gold standard for treating small blood vessels on the face. It is used to target broken capillaries, spider veins, red patches, rosacea and overall redness. It’s safe for all skin types and tones and can be used both on the face and body.

This medical-grade laser delivers pulses of light energy to destroy the vessels or veins. They will gradually be absorbed by your body and the blood flow is then directed to other veins that are found deeper in the body. This laser also treats solar lentigines, age spots, liver spots and brown spots.

Halo is a laser that combines both ablative and non-ablative wavelengths, giving optimal results without the downtime. Halo eliminates years of sun damage by specifically targeting different depths in the skin. It will address discolouration, brown spots, uneven skin tone and visible signs of aging such as sagging skin. This laser will target brown spots on the surface of the skin as well as pigment in the deeper layers of the skin.

Depending on the severity of sun damage, only one or two treatments may be necessary. It is a great choice for those who want to target both tone and texture of their skin. Halo not only helps to get rid of pigmentation, it also stimulates collagen to address sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles caused from aging and sun damage.
