What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are visible red, blue, or purple leg veins that form when the veins become dilated and join together just below the skin’s surface; they may be single veins that are barely noticeable, or they can spread out in a web-like pattern under larger areas of the skin. They are commonly found in the face and legs but can also appear on the torso or chest. On the face, spider veins are also known as broken capillaries or telangiectasia.

Unfortunately, spider veins cannot be prevented, and genetics plays a heavy role in their appearance. Strategies to help reduce your risk of spider veins include maintaining a healthy weight and wearing compression stockings when exercising if you have a family history of spider veins.

Spider Vein Treatment Options at Kingsway

At Kingsway Dermatology, we offer two methods of laser spider vein removal, along with sclerotherapy.

  • – excel V+ for Spider Vein Removal: excel V+ is an award-winning laser with the ideal wavelength to target spider veins, and its broad set of capabilities allows it to address a wide range of superficial to deep vascular concerns. During treatment, the visible blood vessel absorbs the heat from the laser, causing it to shrink and fade from view.
  • – IPL/BBL Laser Spider Vein Removal: Our Palomar Icon IPL (intense pulsed light) laser and Sciton® BBL (broadband light) laser use wavelengths of broad-spectrum light to target vessels in the skin, using heat to destroy the spider veins while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. The veins are then absorbed back into the body naturally.
  • – Sclerotherapy: Sclerotherapy is an injectable treatment for spider veins in the legs, where our dermatologists will inject the vein with a solution to irritate the vessel and cause it to fade over a 4-to-6-week period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Spider Vein Treatment is Right for Me?

When you come to Kingsway for your comprehensive spider vein removal consultation, our experts will sit down with you and review your skin concerns and goals. Once we determine the treatment that will help you achieve the results you’re hoping for, we’ll give you a better idea of what to expect, including the cost, number of sessions, and recovery time for whichever treatment is best for you.

Does Spider Vein Removal Hurt?

During laser spider vein removal, you may experience slight pain or discomfort, as with any of our other laser treatments. You may feel a slight burning or stinging sensation, but it only lasts for the duration of your laser treatment. For sclerotherapy, most patients do not experience any pain beside a slight pinch from the injection.

Is There Downtime for Spider Vein Removal?

After both therapies, patients generally return to daily activities immediately. You may initially experience some irritation, swelling, or bruising in the treatment areas after both sclerotherapy and laser vein removal treatments. Compression stockings may help to reduce pain and help the healing process.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Reducing the appearance of spider veins with laser treatment can take a few sessions depending on the area that is covered, and the number of vessels being treated. For sclerotherapy, the number of sessions will depend on the number of veins being treated.

Is the Treatment Permanent?

In most cases, treatment from both sclerotherapy and laser spider vein removal are permanent. However, it’s still possible for new spider veins to develop at any time, so it may be a good idea to keep wearing compression stockings and make sure you’re staying active!
