Making The Most Of SPF & Sunscreen

Sunscreen sprays have been gaining popularity in recent years, largely because they’re easy to apply and quick to use.
But are they really as effective as the traditional lotion-based sunscreens many of us grew up with? As a board-certified dermatologist and co-founder of Kingsway Dermatology, I’ve seen a lot of questions and misconceptions surrounding sunscreen sprays. So, let’s get straight to the facts.
Do Sunscreen Sprays Really Work?
The short answer is yes—if you use them correctly.
That’s the key. Sunscreen sprays can offer the same level of protection as lotions, but the challenge lies in how they’re applied. Many people don’t apply enough or don’t distribute it evenly across their skin, which leads to gaps in protection.
For proper coverage, you need to be thorough. A good rule of thumb is to use the equivalent of two finger-lengths’ worth of spray per area you’re protecting. And remember, while clear sprays might seem more appealing because they disappear on the skin, they’re actually harder to apply evenly. I prefer opaque sprays because they make it easier to see where you’ve already sprayed—this helps reduce the risk of missing spots.
Getting the Best Protection from a Spray
If you’re going to use a spray, I recommend a two-step approach to ensure full coverage. First, apply a generous layer of spray to the skin.
Don’t stop there—rub it in to make sure it’s evenly distributed. Then, after you’ve rubbed in the first layer, follow up with a second spray for added protection.
I also suggest applying sunscreen at home, before heading out, and allowing it time to fully absorb. Rushing to apply it when you’re already at the beach or in the sun increases the likelihood of missed areas and uneven application.
Pros and Cons of Using Spray Sunscreens
There are definitely advantages to using a spray.
It’s refreshing, easy to use, and less greasy than creams, which is a plus for many people. It’s also a good option for hard-to-reach areas like your back. But there are some downsides to consider. Sprays can be tricky in windy conditions, and the angle at which you hold the bottle affects how much product gets on your skin.
Most people tend to apply less than they should with sprays, which reduces the overall level of protection.
