But what are they, and how do they work?
ABOUT PRP THERAPY
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. For this treatment, the platelets, which are blood cells that promote the healing of wounds, are extracted from your own cells. A small amount of blood is withdrawn, and then the platelets in the blood are isolated using a centrifuge to extract them. Then, these platelets are injected back into the treatment areas.
These platelets release growth factors that stimulate the production of collagen and new tissue, so this therapy is also used to promote wound healing. As a cosmetic treatment, your body will respond naturally to these cells, and you will see improvement in your skin’s tone and texture.
What is Platelet-Rich Fibrin Treatment?
Just as PRP helps to reduce inflammation and regenerate tissues on a cellular level, PRF works with a similar mechanism. The main difference is that PRF contains the enzyme thrombin. Once injected into the treatment area, thrombin forms a clot, almost like a mesh net, that keeps PRP trapped in the injection site location so that the necessary growth factors remain in place for a longer period of time. This allows for PRF treatment to continue to release growth factors, improving cellular regeneration, for approximately four weeks. PRF also includes a higher concentration of white blood cells, fibrin, and a small amount of stem cells that remain in the bloodstream for further healing.
How PRP Is Used

Adding fibrin allows the PRP to form a clot naturally without addition of any chemicals and without red and white blood cells that normally present in a blood clot that are pro-inflammatory. Benefits include:

I've been treated by Dr. Ruppel over the last year and she's been fantastic. Her knowledge, professionalism and patient care is everything you want in a physician. She takes her time to listen to you, offers thorough explanations and provides you with several options in care along with any potential pros/cons to those routes.
I'm a little thrown off by some of the reviews that mention the clinic trying to push expensive products onto their patients. My experience has been the opposite as Dr. Ruppel has given me the cheapest options possible, along with samples of a product to use before we commit to anything medication due to my lack of insurance. It was much appreciated as it helped narrow down the medication for her to prescribe after the fact.
If I were to nitpick, the initial appointment took around 7 months to schedule. That being said, I doubt this is exclusive only to Kingsway Derm.

Had a great 5-series of partial-face IPL with Katie, it visibly reduced my problem areas, that being dark sun damage under my eyes, sun spots became smaller and less prominent, removed some red anginomas, and generally a brighter under-eye area than before I started. I opted for IPL instead of using Retinol, because I personally wanted to avoid using chemicals to achieve this result, and achieve it faster. Katie was very good with communicating the stages and effects of the treatment, and was responsive to my comfort levels during the treatment. Would recommend if you have sensitive skin.

I've been going to Kingsway Derm for quite some time, particularly the cosmetic centre. I've suffered from adult acne for years and developed quite a bit of texture and hyperpigmentation/redness because of it. I met Katie through my daughter who has been seeing Katie for some time with great results. My daughter’s complexion turned from blotchy to clear and radiant. I have had 2 of 3 IPL treatments so far and am amazed at the results. I have already seen a big burst blood vessel nearly disappear, after just the first treatment. The recovery time is short, and the results are amazing. I've had such a wonderful experience at Kingsway Dermatology. From the moment you walk in with the administrative staff you feel confident that you are in good hands. I had Katie who was my skin specialist who did my Moxi procedure and she was so amazing and made me feel so at ease. She knows her stuff and you can tell is so passionate about ski. Its so important to work with a clinic that knows what they are doing and has the science experience, and knowledge to back it up. Dr. Polous is so professional so knowledgeable she is there to not only help people look their best but do it with the very best medical knowledge and best tools in the business. What sets Kingsway apart is that you actually have people who have trained medical degrees and know what they are doing. I would never go anywhere else!

Had to get a stupid mole removed from my stupid face, and I'm really glad I came here. Dr Rachel made me super comfortable. She's both skilled and kind. I'm sure it was an everyday thing for her, but I'd actually never had any kind of surgery done since childhood, so it was a bit scary. I didn't even feel a thing though! Thanks Dr Ruppel!

All the staff at Kingsway are super friendly and the clinic is beautiful. I’ve been seeing Katie for laser treatments over the last year and am so pleased with the results so far. Is PRP or PRF Right for Me?
Both PRP and PRF are popular choices for patients seeking a more natural solution for their cosmetic dermatology needs, but it may not be right for everyone. When you come to Kingsway for your consultation, we’ll speak with you about your skin concerns, lifestyle, and habits, and review your medical history to see if you’d be a good fit for what either treatment offers. If not, we can recommend one of several other skin rejuvenation procedures we offer.
For hair loss, we recommend getting a diagnosis from your family doctor prior to coming in to discuss if PRP for hair retention and growth is right for you.
Do PRP or PRF Treatments Hurt?
Neither are generally painful, though you may feel a small prick of pain during the initial blood draw followed by shallower pricking sensations at the injection site. Depending on the sensitivity level of the treatment area, we may use a topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort.
Do Either Treatments Require Downtime?
The length of your PRP or PRF session will depend on the treatment areas and other factors, but they tend to run approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Afterward, you can resume most of your daily activities, but some may be limited as your body begins its natural healing process. At your consultation, we’ll be able to give you a better idea of what your personal aftercare plan will look like.
When Will I See PRP or PRF Results?
Most patients see results from PRP and PRF injections within a few weeks, and they will improve over the next one to two months as your body increases its collagen production. Results tend to last for one to two years, but this may depend on external factors like sun exposure, age, hormone levels, and your cells’ natural rate of regeneration. PRF results may show for even longer afterward due to the enzyme thrombin’s function within the body. Many patients choose to do a maintenance session once or twice a year to maintain their results and maintain the continued benefits of PRP and PRF.
